The topic I selected is “should sex offender registration laws be changed?’ the two reasons I
chose this topic is because I know a few women that had been molested aschildren for years, by
men (fathers, uncles, step parents, and cousins) in their families. These women were afraid to tell
anyone, because they thought it was something they did wrong. These tragedies have always
hunted me;I have needed to speak out about it for some time. However, in the late 1980’s and
early 1990’s people were not talking about molestation, it was not on television, your mother did
not warn you about it, nor was it mentioned in elementaryhigh school sex education classes, it
was like a dirty shameful secret. In all honesty, I believe registries are a good way to protect the
community and solve problems with reintegration.
The United States has strict laws, which protect its citizens from predators; sex offender
registries are a representation of this. Some argue that registries are a suitable way to protect the
community and solve problems created by sex offenders reintegrating into society. By way of
example, many think the registry protects people from predators for the simple reason that,
people know where the predators are. Conversely, some people believe that community
notification has little, if any, effect on the possibility that a convicted sex offender will strike
again.
The defensible, relevant thesis is that sex offender registration laws should change due to
continuous inadequate behavior sex offenders are doing and getting away with. As a result, the
laws should change to where and what are they doing. The scope of this paper is to describe what
determines our needs to carry out anin-depth assessment of the probability that an individual will
offend sexually. In any case, toincrease public safety, discourage sex offenders from committing
future crimes, and provide law enforcement with additional investigative powers.
