Online learning is a current method of distance education. Understanding distance education and learning is a prerequisite to studying online education and learning. During the review, vital information was discovered concerning missing historical definitions of distance education and fugitive literature. This includes research on the best practices in distance education and online learning, historical completion studies in distance education, and a theoretical background for distance education and learning. Further research of distance education would benefit from further review of relevant fugitive literature and the origins of distance education
