Contextual Factors
There are many relevant
factors that may affect the teaching-learning process. Included below are supports
and challenges that affect instruction and student learning.
A. Community, District and School Factors.
Ooltewah Middle School (OMS) is one of twenty-onemiddle schools
serving students in grades sixth through eighth that are a part of the Hamilton
County Department of Education, a system serving over 42,000 students, 6,500
employees, and 78 schools. OMS, with a current enrollment of approximately 600
students islocated at 5100 Ooltewah-Ringgold Rd, Ooltewah, TN 37363. As a part
of Hamilton County Schools, OMS is also currently in its second year of reforms,
categorized by concentrated efforts to improve the quality of literacy and math
instruction in every classroom, as well as an individualized plan specific to its
needs to obtain maximum success. These promising endeavors include gender
specific classes, flexibility in scheduling, math coaches, literacy coaches,
additional performing arts electives and an increased use of technology in the
classroom. It is among the few public middle schools in Tennessee to receive a
distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 9 out of 10.
