1. Recommend the redesign of Hershey's performance management system to
appeal to the diverse groups that it employs
Hershey company has a powerful performance management system in place according to
the case study. In order for Hershey to improve its performance management for the future of the
company, and to appeal to their diverse workforce, the performance management system needs
to be monitored and assessed to ensure that it is achieving the goal of its intended purpose. For
example, measurement tools need to be in place to assess if the desired behavior and attitudes of
the employees is being achieved and if it is in line with the strategic goals of the company. The
redesigning and placement of effective measurement tools will require collaborative efforts
between management and Human Resources.
Diversity comes in many different forms. In the work place, diversity is not limited to
ethnic origins of the workforce but many other aspects such as age, gender, race and other related
factors. Hershey’s current performance management system emphasizes on two distinctive
generations, the millennial and the baby boomers (Noe, A., J., Gerhart, & Wright P., 2011). The
primary responsibilities of the baby boomers are to teach, train and guide the millennial workers.
Baby boomers, according to the management, act as the company’s role models, trainers, and
advocates that should be emulated by the workforce. The company empowers the baby boomers.
This allows the establishment and millennial workers to utilize the experience and wisdom,
which has a lot of benefits to the company and the labor force. According to Noe, Hollenbeck,
Gerhart and Wright (2011), baby boomers are interested in leaving a legacy and making the lives
