Group Psychology and Interaction in The Godfather(USE AS GUIDE ONLY)
GROUP PSYCHOLOGY AND INTERACTION IN THE GODFATHER Group Psychology and Interaction in The Godfather GROUP PSYCHOLOGY AND INTERACTION IN THE GODFATHER Group Psychology and Interaction in The Godfather A few years ago I was given a choice on a psychology paper to write about a film or television episode whose plot was based on a group orchestrating a crime or villainous, violent act. I was to draw on the week’s readings and theories I had researched in the course to address questions relevant to the assignment. I chose to write about a scene from the classic film The Godfather, which was then celebrating its 40 anniversary. Over the years it has remained a favorite, mainly in part due the excellent storytelling as well as the laudable performances of Marlon Brando and Al Pacino among others. I also grew up in a predominately Italian-American neighborhood in Upstate, New York and have memories associated with the film, albeit some negative ones per the protests of the Italian-American Civil Rights League concerning the stereotyping of Italian-Americans in the film and in the culture and media at large (Pileggi, 1971). In terms of the film itself there are a lot of great scenes which could well be noted. I chose to write about a scene called “Baptism and Murder” (Speicher, 2006). At this stage in the film, the Godfather Don Corelone has passed away due to an apparent heart attack. At the funeral it becomes evident to his son Michael Corleone that the Barzini family is going to try to kill him in an effort to usurp him and thus the power and influence of the Corleones. The “Baptism and Murder” scene is essentially about Michael settling family scores in order to claim power as the new Godfather and head of the Five Families. The scene is particularly engaging due to the montage editing employed by Coppola which cuts between Michael Corleone at his nephew’s baptism, and his hit men killing off his enemies. Coppola’s editing serves to show the duplicity of good and evil and the realm of Michael’s character.
