The Dehumanization of America
It appears that humanity in the United States is starting to deteriorate quickly and
people are beginning to lose those qualities that make them human, such as empathy
for their fellow man or woman. In his work titled The Theory of Moral Sentiment, Adam
Smith writes that it is normal and natural for people to feel sympathy and pity for
humans who are suffering or doing without, while also desiring revenge and
punishment towards those people who have caused harm to others. Unfortunately, the
progression of humanity today shows that we are starting to lose that particular balance
between sympathy and vengeance that Smith writes about.
Because of these imbalances, people are getting to the stage where they no
longer care about the hardships that their fellow humans are going through. This
apathetic attitude towards others is causing humans to no longer have any form of
natural sympathy for one another. More and more people are starting to become cold
and uncaring, or even suspicious of each other, and are unwilling to help one another
out when all that is needed is assistance and understanding. On the other extreme, we
are also becoming more vengeful and often seek severe punishments for people who
have performed even the smallest of infringements.
