The Role of Leadership in Shaping Organizational Culture(USE AS GUIDE ONLY)
THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP IN SHAPING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE The Role of Leadership in Shaping Organizational Culture THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP IN SHAPING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE Abstract This paper reflects on the leadership characteristics and skills that assist in promoting a healthy organizational culture. Leadership styles that help shape and promote organizational health are discussed in addition to how a leader may utilize his or her power and influence to facilitate teamwork and ethical frameworks. THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP IN SHAPING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE The Role of Leadership in Shaping Organizational Culture Leadership is arguably distinct from management (Toor & Ofori, 2008). Toor and Ofori (2008) noted conceptual distinctions that put both into two distinct camps, though a leader could arguably manage well, and a said manager could no doubt lead companies effectively. Ostensibly, if the role of a leader is to both manage and lead successfully, the relationship between his or her leadership and managerial capability is interwoven into the leadership style that is being employed concurrently in the given organization. Those leadership characteristics and skills that are utilized in promoting a healthy organizational culture in that setting may not be necessarily as useful in another. The leadership styles that do promote a healthy organizational culture generally follow the precepts of what McGregor (1960) called Theory Y, which denotes how leaders or managers address, perceive, interact, and behave with employees. Indeed, leadership behavior can and does impact organizational culture. How a leader specifically responds and reacts to circumstances whether mundane or situations of crisis can set the tone and leave an indelible print on subordinates as to the kind of company they work for. The leader’s actions and behavioral patterns reflect the manner in which he or she uses their power to promote either a healthy or in some cases, an unhealthy organizational culture. Effective leaders typically strive to be role models and promote and disseminate ethical frameworks in line with Y theory values, if they expect to lead healthy organizations. Theory X and Theory Y
