Classifying each team member into one of the four matrix areas
After carefully reviewing each of the candidates in preparation for my team, I find it that
they all have the potential to succeed and function properly with one another if they set their
mind to it, and it’s my responsibility to encourage them to do so. Each of these candidates have
both lows and highs, but we will distinguish each of them as we go down the list. Beginning with
Alice and Lisa, which I would set at a three due to their high skills and motivation. These two
candidates would be the two that I depend on to work alongside with myself because of their
ability to help promote success and growth. Separating the two and defining their individual
character, I find that Alice has been a great asset to our company and continues to prove it by
being responsible for improving some of the old processes and is also involved in many training
initiatives due to her extensive knowledge and skills. This led her to have amazing results
repeatedly while she continues to strive and do her best. She has all the qualities needed for a
successful team. Much like Alice, Lisa is also one of the company’s top performers and at her
rate, all the other employees believe she has natural leading skills. Her ability and willingness to
learn a new task constantly has led her to catch on to these new tasks and master them in a short
period of time. I would most likely use them to work alongside myself, while also encouraging
Bill and Doug who I rated both a four due to their lack of skills but has high motivation. There
will always be one or two who may lack certain skills, but as a team we’re there to help
encourage one another so that we all come out successful. Because Bill and Doug both rated high
in motivation, which showed me that they are willing to learn but may be lacking the ability to
perform to the best of their ability. This can result from many different reasons, but as a team
leader, I need to find out what that is and work on how we can assist them to want to build more
skills by assigning them to take extra training on their personal time. This will be beneficial in
the long run because they will continue to build skills on their own time, while also building
more working with my team. Chris on the other hand which I rated a two due to his low skills
and motivation, would be the one I would focus more of my time on. As a team player, there is
no room for lack of skills or motivation, but clearly he has the potential which is why he is
employed by the organization. I would get to the bottom of why he’s lacking the skills and
motivation to see if we can find a resolution for him, so that he will be an asset to the team.
Lastly, Erica which I rated a one because she definitely has the skills but lacks the motivation. I
would probably assign her to work closely with Alice and Lisa because they would be able to
assist her with her needed motivation. As a team, we strive to succeed together and that requires
a lot of time, dedication, skills, and motivation. We all have to want and achieve the same
objective, and if only half of the team is motivated to do so, we will face many obstacles and
barriers.
My role as a facilitator, coach, or a combination of both
As a team leader, I believe it’s necessary that I play both roles. This is a position where
your peers look up to you for solutions and answers. If I had only one focus such as the team
project, I might make my team members feel insignificant and that can cause a lot of
discouragement. That absolutely cannot happen considering I have a couple of candidates who
already lack motivation or skills. As a leader, I believe that I should coach my team to become
future leaders, which will lead them to be more motivated and interested in building better skills
that they currently lack. When a leader shows that they care about their team, the team members
will take the initiative to do things on their own so that they can prove how much value they’re
adding to the team and how much of an asset they can be in future team projects. Many team
members look up to a person in a leadership position, so I believe it’s important that I provide a
path that is easy for them to follow by working with them and coaching them at the same time.
How team competencies would benefit from shared leadership
Team competencies would definitely benefit from shared leadership because everyone on
the team has an opportunity to play the role of a leadership position. I can personally say that
during my time in the U.S Army, there were many times where I wanted to be a sergeant because
of the respect you get and the ability to have more control of what goes on or my ability to give
input on a mission. Unfortunately during that time, I was a lower enlisted and I didn’t have those
opportunities, and I was never offered the opportunity to show my skills and motivation. This is
why I feel that there’s a significant importance that team competencies would benefit from
shared leadership. I would consider doing a rotation with each team member and allow them to
have full control on daily projects, while under my supervision. This gives them room to build
motivation and create ample amount of opportunities for them in the organization and their
future position as leaders. In doing so, I would also have my team work together on certain
projects while also allowing them to work independently. During meetings, I would ask that they
share their interest and what we can do as a team to help improve problematic areas. If I feel that
one is lacking motivation, I would assign them to work beside someone who has plenty of it,
vice versa I would have someone that lack skills to work with someone with plenty of different
skills. This would be beneficial for all team members because we learn something from one
another each day.
